A Journey Through Timeless Design

Jeremy Hershan

A personal story

Introducing HAULIER: Where timeless design meets enduring craftsmanship. Founded in Sydney in 2020 by Jeremy Hershan, a seasoned designer with a passion for luxury and heritage, HAULIER creates contemporary heirlooms using traditional manufacturing techniques. With a seamless fusion of Australian and European influences, their goods are crafted from superior-quality materials, designed to stand the test of time and celebrate the beauty of life’s journeys.

Q: How have your experiences during the “glory days of travel” influenced the designs and concepts behind HAULIER goods?

A: Haulier takes inspiration from the glory days of commercial air travel, particularly the 1960s through to the 1990s. It was a time when travel and style went hand in hand, a time before celebrity stylists and when people really dressed for the occasion.

Q: What design principles do you prioritize when crafting HAULIER goods to ensure they remain timeless and enduring?

A: ‘Enduring Goods’ is our brand  philosophy. It’s written above the doorfront to our flagship store and emblazoned on our products. This holds dual meaning and represents our commitment to timeless design and lasting quality. We actively seek out traditional manufacturing techniques that have often  been overlooked over time.  These traditional methods are time consuming and labour intensive but allow us to make products that  stand the test of time.

Q: Could you share insights into the process of selecting superior-quality materials for HAULIER products and how they contribute to the longevity of the goods?

A: Superior quality textiles are central to what we do at HAULIER. Our signature 24oz cotton selvedge canvas is woven on antique shuttle looms which allows us to weave to the precise dimensions of our bags  therefore eliminating cutting waste. This time intensive process results in a highly compact and robust canvas that can not be reproduced on modern looms. We take this mindful and detailed approach to all our fabrications and work exclusively to develop them with the best mills in France, Italy, U.K. and Japan.

Q: How has your love for travel and exploration influenced the global appeal of HAULIER’s products, and do you draw inspiration from specific destinations or cultures?

A: I spent the best part of 10 years living  and working abroad in Antwerp, Paris and London. Those experiences have informed my perspective and overall approach to design. HAULIER is a reflection of those  experiences. There are specific destinations and cultures that I consistently draw inspiration from including Cannes, St Tropez and the major travel hubs of the world including London, Paris, Los Angeles  and New York.

Q: How do you find ways to incorporate the essence of both Sydney and European culture into your designs, giving HAULIER goods a unique identity?

A: Being of European heritage myself and having spent a career working in Europe  along with the fact our sourcing and manufacturing is based solely in Europe means there is a strong European thread to the brand! Our home of Sydney with its unique  lifestyle and climate  brings some contrast and a distinctly Australian outlook.

Q: Can you share a specific travel experience or cultural encounter that profoundly influenced your creative journey and the vision behind HAULIER?

A: The education I had working for heritage brands in London gave me a strong grounding in the codes and traditions of menswear. I am a firm believer in the old adage that you should know the rules in order to break them. One of my favourite past times while living there was sitting in Soho and Mayfair and observing the ‘old boys’ of London in their natural habitat.

Q: If you were to take an extended Sabbatical, what two places would you visit and what would you do there?

A: Right now, I am keen to spend some time in Los Angeles, immersing myself in the mystique and folklore that surround  it. There are so many layers to that city that I find inspiring.
